About me
I believe that every person has the innate ability within themselves to integrate and grow from whatever challenges life presents to them at whatever stage. Sometimes however, we need support in doing this.
It is my role as a counsellor to help the client identify this and provide the right environment, tools and knowledge to find a way forward together. I derive from a range of theories and identify as an integrative therapist. I have a strong foundation in the person-centred approach and use solution focused brief therapy and cognitive behavioural therapeutic tools in my practice.
After I completed a degree in Psychology in 1993 I continued to have an interest in the workings of the mind and in particular the mind-body connection and the power of mind-set, heart-set, health-set and soul-set.
In 2000 I decided to combine my interest in psychology and counselling with my career in education and qualified with a higher diploma in Career Guidance and Counselling and worked in a high school for 11 years in this position which I really enjoyed. There, I provided a whole school service with individual and group guidance to young people age 11-20. I completed my master’s in education specialising in CGC in 2007. I also trained in CBT and SFBT to broaden my approach.
During this time, I became increasingly interested in the positive psychology movement and I qualified as a Life coach. More recently in 2018 I updated as an Emotional Wellbeing Coach in Scotland. My emotional wellbeing journey led me to Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action), a sensory based movement practice of which I have become an instructor and has led to my interest in somatic movement and therapy and to training with Gabor Mate in 2022-3. I hope to merge my interest in somatics and movement with talk therapy in the future.
I have been working with adults for 4 years now and my work with young people has been a very useful foundation. I have enjoyed working with women groups and circles but more recently I am experiencing an increasing number of men seeking help and I have become more aware of their need to heal. I would like to work more with men individually and also in circle. I continue to pursue regular CPD through various sources and I am waiting for my accreditation status to come through from BACP with whom I have been registered since 2016. I look forward to meeting and working with you through this wonderful platform Hope For Men.
