About me
12 years ago I started as a youth worker in Greater Manchester, England. We did some good work but frequently encountered young people reporting mental health concerns. The challenge was that they wouldn't talk to other agencies because they didn't trust them. Their words stayed with me throughout my BSc (Hons), into my MSc and on into full time practice. Throughout the years clients have trusted me with their questions, goals, life events and worries and I have honoured their experiences and the trust placed in me. My commitment to you is to earn that trust by taking time to understand your life story and respecting your desire to see change in your life. I provide an empathic and straight-talking approach where your lived experiences are validated, evidence based change strategies are used and your goals are central. If you have emotions you want to feel more or less of, memories you want to heal from or things you would love to achieve, I would be glad to work with you on your journey to freedom.
Clinical Approach
I offer both CBT and EMDR (with and without Ego State/internal dialogue) for the treatment of anxiety, stress and traumatic experiences.
CBT takes complex situations and breaks them down into manageable chunks, focusing on thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and reactions. We may focus on using fair thinking to combat internal criticism or overthinking, approaching situations we'd rather avoid, resisting counter-intuitive strategies which should make things better but actually keep us trapped in vicious cycles, and creating experiments to test out new techniques.
EMDR, by contrast, aims to pull as much information together as possible, trusting your minds in-built strengths to drive healing. Our job is to remove blocks to healing including unmet needs and self-criticism. EMDR focuses on the parts of the memory we'd rather not look at, bringing these forbidden parts into the light and allowing them to share their side of the story. Once all parts of the story are heard and respected, a fair conclusion can be landed on. Many of us have the experience of being torn in different directions and I specialise in helping an internal tug-of-war become a moment of insight.
